G.I. Joe USS Flagg AFA Q70 (Hasbro, 1985). The Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Flagg was released as a Series 4 vehicle in 1985 and stands as the crown jewel of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero collecting, the one playset whose scale, ambition, and logistical absurdity still separate it from nearly everything else in the vintage action figure aisle. Measuring roughly seven-and-a-half feet long when assembled, the Flagg transformed the Joe team from a squad with vehicles into a full military operation, complete with flight deck, command tower, support equipment, and Admiral Keel-Haul, the carrier's exclusive commanding officer. Sold again in 1986 and discontinued domestically in 1987, the Flagg became legendary not only because of its original size and cost, but because surviving examples demand space, patience, and a collector's tolerance for enormous plastic infrastructure. The genius of the Flagg is that it was never just "big." It was big with purpose. It gave Skystrikers somewhere to land, gave Keel-Haul a command, gave the entire Joe team a floating headquarters, and gave every kid who saw the box a sudden understanding that some toys were less a purchase than a domestic negotiation. For ARAH collectors, it remains the great centerpiece, the playset that turns a collection into a fleet. Graded AFA Q70 EX+, this example carries a Qualified grade from AFA. There are holy grails, and then there is the U.S.S. Flagg, the toy so large it did not sit under the Christmas tree so much as annex the living room.

More Information: Derryl DePriest is a longtime toy industry executive and pop culture historian who served as Vice President of Global Brand Management at Hasbro from 2001 to 2018, overseeing major initiatives for Star Wars and G.I. Joe during a transformative era for collector-focused product. During his tenure, Hasbro launched key lines including The Vintage Collection and the 6-inch Star Wars: The Black Series, both of which reshaped modern action figure presentation and articulation standards. A lifelong G.I. Joe enthusiast and recognized liaison between Hasbro and the collector community, DePriest later authored Star Wars: The Vintage Collection Archive Edition and has contributed extensively to documenting the history of G.I.
