Own a Chair from the Set of Gone With the Wind
Original Screen-Used Set Pieces to be Auctioned by Heritage
DALLAS, TEXAS: Perhaps you can't actually visit the family mansion of Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler in the immortal film classic, Gone With the Wind, but now you'll have a chance to own several pieces of furniture from that legendary home, when Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries offers four chairs actually used on the set of that landmark production.
"These exceptional pieces, an arm chair and three side chairs, were used in multiple scenes in Gone With the Wind," said Doug Norwine, Director of Music and Entertainment Auctions for Heritage. "Characterizing the Reconstruction-era atmosphere of the epic film, these chairs can easily be seen flanking the front door and in the dining room in several important scenes."
"Considered by many to be one of the greatest movies ever made, Gone With the Wind is a true epic, set in the American South during the chaotic and difficult years surrounding the Civil War," Norwine said. "Released in 1939, and starring Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara and Clark Gable as the dashing and roguish Rhett Butler, the film garnered an incredible eight Oscar wins, including Best Actress (Leigh), Best Supporting Actress (Hattie McDaniel, the first African American to be nominated for, and win, an Academy Award), Best Director (Victor Fleming), and Best Picture, and has remained a true American classic ever since."
Originally acquired from an historic MGM auction of props and wardrobe, the chairs were subsequently purchased by the owners of the renowned antiquarian and rare book store Heritage Book Shop (not affiliated with Heritage Auctions) in West Hollywood, where they have been displayed for the past 20 years, receiving considerable scrutiny, attention and even media coverage. "Actual screen-used props from this remarkable film are few and far between," Norwine said, "and the few pieces that do come to market are hotly contested. I expect these pieces to inspire some spirited bidding among cinemaphiles worldwide."
"For more information about these important pieces of movie history, I'd invite everyone to visit our website at www.HA.com," Norwine said. "Once there, you'll see full-color, enlargeable images of each and every auction lot, along with our complete catalog descriptions. Best of all, as the auction draws nearer, you'll even be able to place your bids online."
Heritage Auction Galleries will offer several chairs from the set of Gone With the Wind in their upcoming Music and Entertainment Signature auction, to be held on April 5 and 6, 2008, at their headquarters in Dallas, TX.
