Description

John Wayne Eye Patch from Rooster Cogburn (Universal, 1975).
Made of black leather/suede with fine wire mesh painted black; makeup residue still evident on the inside patch; one of many worn by the Duke throughout the film as he portrayed the ruthless, one-eyed U.S. Marshal alongside Katharine Hepburn as the funnily named "Eula Goodnight". Includes letter of authentication from Wayne's personal costumer on the film, Luster Bayless, in which he verifies the eye patch is screen worn. Measures approximately 32" from one tip of the leather strap to the other. In Very Good screen-used condition, exhibiting light wear. Letter of Provenance from Luster Bayless.

Exhibited: "The American Freedom Train", 1975-1976.

Provenance:
Luster Bayless served as John Wayne's costumer on Rooster Cogburn, as well as more than a dozen others, including the Duke's final film The Shootist. Following the theatrical release of Rooster Cogburn, this piece was loaned to the 26-car American Freedom train exhibit, where along with 500 other artifacts, it toured the United States in celebration of 200 years of American history. It was subsequently returned to Hal Wallis Productions at Universal Studios, and after that, gifted by Hal Wallis' secretary to the family of actor Dan Seymour.
