Description

J. D. Sumner's Telephone from Elvis Presley. An unusual desk telephone consisting of a gold handset and rotary dial in a discrete wooden box with hinged lid, used by Sumner throughout the 1970s. It was given to him as a gift by Presley, and similar to one Elvis himself used.
Dyana Butler, daughter of Don Butler, the former president of Sumar Talent Agency and manager and agent for J. D., recalls: "I was visiting J. D. in his office one day as I did quite frequently -- I loved J. D. and Mary, his wife, and I spent a lot of time with Mary when J. D. was out of town. On this particular day, J. D. was in town and I stopped by to give him a hug and share a few laughs. I noticed the gold telephone sitting on his desk and asked about it. He told me about Elvis believing J. D. had a 'direct line' to God. Elvis told J. D. if he was going to be talking to God, he needed a special phone, so Elvis gave him the gold telephone and referred to it as God's Hotline."
The phone is in Very Fine to Excellent condition. From the J.D. Sumner Estate. Accompanied by letters of provenance from Shirley Sumner Enoch and Dyana Butler.
