Description

Pacific Rim (Warner Bros., 2013), Wayne Barlowe - "Knifehead" Concept Sketch Original Art. Dual profiles of Knifehead, a living blade forged in nightmare-its jagged maw and mountainous crest slicing through the abyss-dread incarnate in Barlowe's meticulous hand, a vision of Kaiju terror honed for del Toro's Pacific Rim. Knifehead appears at the very beginning of the film, as the Becket brothers, piloting Gipsy Danger, battle this massive killer with the sharpened knife-like ridge at its front. At first, the brothers are successful, until the Kaiju tears their Jaeger apart, breaches the cockpit, and kills the older brother, Yancy (Diego Klattenhoff). Barlowe's schematic highlights the Kaiju's immense scale and the deadly blade that defines its sharpened moniker. Graphite on paper with an image area of 11" x 7.5". Signed and dated by Barlowe. Exhibits light handling. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.

"To me, the most iconic Kaiju in the film. And the very first one we conceived. Kaijus usually reference a real animal: Lobster, Bull, Oyster, etc., or sometimes an object - that of course, includes a knife. The reason why I loved Knifehead is that it perfectly contained every principle that would make a Kaiju hard to beat: You are fighting a 250-foot Knife. Not easy. We used this design as a basis for 70% of the rest of the Kaijus. Like writing a song, this came fully formed to Wayne Barlow, and we quickly locked it." From the personal collection of Guillermo del Toro.
