Description
Cronos (Grupo del Toro, 1992), Guillermo del Toro Original Early Concept Sketch of Vampire. The earliest production artwork in this sale drawn by Guillermo del Toro himself, entitled "Skinheaded young vampire with clock. 2nd practice", this rare concept sketch offers a direct window into the filmmaker's early vision for Cronos. A skeletal, muscular vampire clutches a small pocket watch. The story of elderly Jesús Gris (Federico Luppi)-a man grappling with his humanity after gaining monstrous immortality through the Cronos device-this drawing by the director reflects his final transformation and foreshadows the pivotal scene in the film, moments before he chooses to destroy the device and end his unnaturally extended life. Signed "Guillermo ' 87, Agosto 26" on the bottom right corner. A singular artifact of del Toro's personal design process and evolving visual language. Graphite on paper with an image area of 8" x 10.75"; plexiglass-front framed to 15.5" x 17.5". Toned with light creasing. Unexamined out of frame. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions."I started drawing ideas for Cronos in the early 1980s and did so in pencil. I used some of these images to apply to Dick Smith's FX makeup course, which changed my life and allowed me to found Necropia Inc., and thus make Cronos. This is one of those images and the only one ever to be sold at auction. Likely, it will be the very last one I part with too." From the personal collection of Guillermo del Toro.
