Scarface (UA, 1932), Typed Carbon Draft Screenplay. ...
Description
Scarface (UA, 1932), Typed Carbon Draft Screenplay. Vintage original typed carbon draft for Howard Hawks' Scarface, 140-pages (as paginated) on 8" x 13" tissue vellum paper with 2-top brads and tissue vellum title page stamped "SCARFACE" and number "10". The title page byline reads only "Seton I. Miller", who was brought on for continuity and dialogue prior to production. An 8.5" x 5.25" yellow memo note on Caddo Company letterhead labeled "Inter-Office Communication" indicates, "For your information Production #10 'SCARFACE' will start as of July 6, 1931" with the same date on the memo line. The date present indicates a production draft. Released in April of 1932, Scarface remains a premiere example of pre-Code gangster films, and saw the partnering of two titans of Golden Age Hollywood, producer Howard Hughes and director Howard Hawks. It was, however, subjected to regulations from the Hays Code, which demanded a prologue condemning gangsters and an ending that made Tony Camonte (Paul Muni) less glorified. Exhibits expected signs of wear from handling and age, including chips, edgewear, bumped corners, and some tears consistent with delicate tissue paper.
