BONNIE MACLEAN'S ART SURE LOOKS GOOD IN GEM MINT

BG-87 Quicksilver Messenger Service 1967 Fillmore Auditorium Concert Poster Graded 10 Gem Mint. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for QMS, the Grass Roots and Mad River playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Thursday thru Saturday nights, October 5-7, 1967. Designed by Bonnie MacLean and known as BG-87 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was graded a beyond-delightful 10 Gem Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

Artist MacLean had fun with her artwork; it's not random. The central Mercury-like figure pertains to Quicksilver Messenger Service, the tall grassy field plays nicely into the Grass Roots, and the body of water represents Mad River. This poster also stands out from the others for having the concert dates in such a large, prominent position. Quicksilver and the Grass Roots are well-known commercial successes, but as for the third band, Mad River was a psychedelic folk-rock quartet who hailed from Berkeley and had first formed in Ohio the year before. Measures 14" x 21". COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Mad River took their name from the real Mad River near Yellow Springs, OH (about 20 miles east of Dayton). A year later they relocated to the Bay Area. Still another year later they signed a contract with Capitol Records and released two LPs. One of them, Paradise Bar and Grill, did manage to sneak into Billboard's album chart the same week as the 1969 Woodstock festival, although just briefly.
