The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Sly & Family Stone 1969 Palm Beach Festival Concert Poster (AOR-3.7)....
Description
The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Sly & Family Stone 1969 Palm Beach Festival Concert Poster (AOR-3.7). An original first-printing concert poster advertising the First Annual International Palm Beach Music & Art Festival taking place over the weekend of November 28-30, 1969. It was held at the International Raceway in (West) Palm Beach, Florida, on the coast about 70 miles north of Miami. The musical stars at the event included the Rolling Stones, in the concluding show of their legendary 1969 tour of America (not counting Altamont), and Janis Joplin, still touring with her Kozmic Blues Band. The poster also lists the Jefferson Airplane, Sly & the Family Stone, The Byrds, a young King Crimson, Johnny Winter, Steppenwolf and many others. Measures 22" x 30" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.258 (illus.).
More Information: The poster's design charmingly tames and brings the British bad boys into the Woodstock ethos of the day. The Stones still managed to make their mark, though. As bassist Bill Wyman writes in his books, "While the fans waited for us to arrive, promoter Dave Rupp allowed part of his raceway to be torn up and burned to keep them warm. We went on at 5:00 AM and played for an hour and a half. Our next stop on the live schedule was [Altamont]."
There's a delightful design story behind this poster, too. Graphic artist Royce Emley had meant to put a peace sign around the dove's neck, but he accidentally left out a stem and wound up with the Mercedes-Benz emblem instead. Many people surely didn't notice or care, but the poster was indeed reprinted later with the correct peace symbol in place. Thus, this scarce, pre-show first printing is easy to identify.
Although this poster is featured in the Art of Rock book - on the same page as the Monterey Pop poster - it is not graded by CGC because it's just a bit too large for their biggest plastic holder. Heritage even sent a specimen of this poster to CGC trying to plead the case, but alas, their biggest encapsulation slab just didn't quite fit.
The Stones' set list on this tour consisted of "Jumpin' Jack Flash," "Carol," "Sympathy for the Devil," "Stray Cat Blues," "Love in Vain," "Prodigal Son," "You Got to Move," "Under My Thumb," "I'm Free," "Midnight Rambler," "Live with Me," "Gimme Shelter," "Little Queenie," "Satisfaction," "Honky Tonk Women" and "Street Fighting Man."
Condition details: Poster has just some light handling creasing to the glossy paper.
