Description

BG-171 Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane 1969 S.F. Concert Poster Graded 9.8. First-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane headlining both the Fillmore West and Winterland over the span of Thursday thru Sunday, May 1-4, 1969. Known as BG-171 in the Bill Graham numbered series and designed by Randy Tuten, this poster was graded a high-flying 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). Tuten's artwork depicts a man in a flowing robe harkening upward to a biplane passing overhead, an early symbol of the Airplane dating all the way back to BG-1. Measures 14 1/8" x 21". From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: On Friday & Saturday nights, Mongo Santamaria was the support act. He was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who had scored an unlikely Top 10 pop hit in 1963 with Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." And then on Thursday and Sunday nights, Cold Blood and the Elvin Bishop Group were the opening acts.
