Description
Gilligan's Island (CBS TV, 1964-1967), Alan Hale Jr. "The Skipper" Signature Captain's Hat. A group of unlikely companions stranded on a remote island, forced to endure, survive, and live with each other. This wonderfully simple premise allowed the CBS sitcom Gilligan's Island to quickly became one of the most beloved television series of all time, from its initial run to well into syndication. To execute that conceit, the series' costume designers had to create character looks that would, essentially, remain the same every episode - embodying both the idea that (most) of the characters would not have brought spare clothes with them at all. As well, this restriction emphasizes the sense of timelessness that allowed the series to continue for almost 100 episodes over three seasons without feeling like much time had passed at all. For The Skipper (Alan Hale), this was embodied by the simple polo shirt and captain's hat worn consistently throughout the series.Presented here is a vintage original navy-blue wool captain's hat, with black vinyl visor, braid attached to two black anchor buttons and an embroidered gold-toned anchor to front of crown, lined in gold sateen and plastic film retaining internal Lancaster Brand maker's mark and faux leather internal headband. This piece was acquired directly from Hale's wife, Trinket Hale, who identified it as "show-used", though it is difficult to conclusively determine if the hat was worn on the classic series, a reunion show, and/or both. Item exhibits minor wear commensurate with age and production use, presenting well overall. Provenance: Heritage Auctions, "The Comisar Collection", June 3, 2023, Lot #89387. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From The Stewart Berkowitz Television Treasures Collection.
