Description

Batman: The Movie (TCF, 1966), Penguin's Henchman Flying Umbrella Filming Miniature. Vintage original filming miniature for one of Penguin's Henchmen, constructed of a carved wooden and hand-painted henchman figure sitting astride an umbrella vehicle constructed of a wire and metal armature substructure with mustard-yellow fabric covering. Henchman figure is expertly studio-carved and painted including carved newsboy hat and facial expression. Clad in a mustard-yellow fabric long-sleeved shirt, brown fabric pants, and an orange fabric bandana tied around his neck. Affixed to umbrella with a pin nail. The 1966 film-length adaptation of the beloved television series featured Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) facing off against a supergroup of regular villains known as the United Underworld that includes Penguin (Burgess Meredith). Filming miniatures like this one can be seen in a sequence where Penguin and the Riddler (Frank Gorshin) soar through the sky to ambush an unmasked Batman at his apartment. Exhibiting production use and age including with left arm missing and loose right arm, paint wear, and distressing to the umbrella fabric resulting in an approx. 3.5" tear. Measuring approx. 10.5" x 5" overall. This piece of ingenuous miniature props-making is indicative of the creativity and spirit of practical effects that embodies the original series and first film adaptation of the Batman franchise, and has been held in the collections of two significant collectors of Hollywood memorabilia, John Azarian and Dr. Stewart Berkowitz. Provenance: Profiles in History, "The Azarian Collection", December 17, 2019, Lot #1087. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From The Stewart Berkowitz Television Treasures Collection.
