Description
Hellboy II: The Golden Army (Universal, 2008), Guillermo del Toro's Signed and Annotated Personal Color Coded Script (Draft 5, April 19, 2007). Guillermo del Toro's personal "Director Scene Locked" shooting script for Hellboy II: The Golden Army, measuring 8.25" x 11.75" and totaling 92 pages (as paginated). This is Draft 5 of the screenplay, watermarked "GUILLERMO DEL TORO UK 000," and signed by the director. The front cover includes handwritten notations in felt pen reading "COLOR CODED LIGHT / WARDROBE ART DEPT." Bound with a Bantex file fastener between a translucent cover and red cardstock back. This working script is heavily annotated by del Toro, featuring extensive hand-drawn color-coded bars at the top or bottom of most pages to indicate specific lighting and costume palettes for individual scenes and characters. Created with felt-tip markers the bars often include character names written beside them to clarify which palette corresponds to whom. Del Toro's handwritten notes appear throughout the script, ranging from supplemental commentary to questions and reminders, such as "EXPLAIN - STREET CREDENTIALS" on page 12, "WHY DEATH? / HIS DAUGHTER" on page 30, and "QUOTE" on page 42. Many of these annotations reflect last-minute thoughts or unresolved creative elements, providing rare insight into the director's decision-making process. On the reverse of the final two pages, del Toro has also sketched figures in graphite-visual explorations that likely helped him work out specific details before filming. The frequent use of vibrant colored markers has resulted in bleed-through on many pages, adding a layered, almost painterly quality to the document. Altogether, this script offers a remarkable window into del Toro's visual planning process, revealing his deep understanding of color theory and how it informs the rich, symbolic palette that guides departments such as wardrobe and art direction across his films. Script exhibits expected age and wear, with minor scratching/staining to the translucent cover with additional light edgewear and creasing to pages from use. Comes with Full LOAs from Beckett Authentication Services and PSA/DNA."I very rarely annotate anything on the script pages (as I normally generate new pages almost every day), so this reflects a very early - pivotal - moment in which I was figuring out what the color coding of the film could mean. I used COPIC alcohol markers to create a color language strip, and I shared it with the HOD [Head of Department] of art, wardrobe, and cinematography." From the personal collection of Guillermo del Toro.
