The Rolling Stones Honolulu, Hawaii Large Hand-Painted US Concert Poster (1966)....
Description
BRIAN JONES' LAST CONCERT IN AMERICA
The Rolling Stones Honolulu, Hawaii Large Hand-Painted US
Concert Poster (1966). Vintage original concert poster
advertising the Rolling Stones performing for "One Nite Only" on
Thursday, July 28, 1966 at the International Sports Center Arena in
Honolulu, Hawaii. The rare white cloth poster measuring 45.25" x
67", entirely hand-painted and believed to be one of just two
posters made in this style. In all likelihood an on-site venue
banner, perhaps within the building's lobby or around the box
office. Such was the bespoke nature of the poster, the original
pencil marking for the lettering and text spacing can still be seen
on closer inspection. This date marked the last American concert
Brian Jones ever played. Because it was the final North American
show the Stones would play for more than three years, not returning
until the fall of 1969 - this concert was the emphatic conclusion
to the Stones' relationship with U.S. audiences for 1964-1966. The
Honolulu radio station KPOI-FM presented this show, also
broadcasting it live and recorded for a possible live album in the
fall (although the Stones ended up opting for the Royal Albert Hall
UK performance instead). As such, bootlegs do exist of this
concert, with this poster being an exceedingly rare opportunity to
acquire a tangible and attractive relic of the important concert -
Heritage offered the other example in 2024 which realized $10,000.
Inscribed to verso "For Mel Lawrence, KPOI, Rolling Stones". Mel
Lawrence is an American concert producer who worked for KPOI and
later KFRC throughout the 1960s, with contributions to landmarks
shows including Woodstock, Magic Mountain Music Festival, and
Monterey Pop Festival. Rolled, exhibits handling wear, surface
blemishes and minor tears consistent with age and display,
including tape wear to left edge, and staining towards right of
poster. Small hole to lower right section of cloth. Light scuffing
or smudging to paint, with preparatory pencil lines extant.
Unobtrusive writing to verso which also has visible staining to one
side. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
