THE MONTH THE ROLLING STONES ACHIEVED THEIR FIRST UK NUMBER 1 SINGLE

The Rolling Stones Imperial Ballroom, Nelson UK Concert Poster (1964). A scarce and early vintage original concert poster for Lancashire's Imperial Ballroom ("The Ballroom of the Stars"), advertising the headline performance by "Those Dynamic Rolling Stones" on Saturday, July 25, 1964. Measuring 30" x 40", the show was billed as the return of "The World's No. 1 Rhythm and Blues Band" with support from the Silhouettes and the Thunderbeats. The Rolling Stones achieved their first UK number 1 single with "It's All Over Now", less than two weeks before this performance. A prolific venue in the Northwest of England, the Imperial Ballroom (affectionately known by locals as "The Imp") hosted numerous rock n' roll gigs in the 1960s and 1970s, prior to its tragic destruction by a fire in March, 1976. Other artists to have performed at the venue include the Beatles, the Who, the Kinks, the Hollies, and Gene Vincent. The regal-sounding venue belies a hectic live touring experience for the members of the Stones, with crowd control, audience fainting en masse, and police escorts becoming an ever more common sight at a Rolling Stones performance in the UK and abroad. The Stones are quoted in Rolling Stones 50 on the chaotic nature of their shows over the course of 1964: "This was the time that our ballroom shows were getting increasingly difficult... We had a police escort on many occasions." Literature: Rolling Stones 50, 2012, p. 73 (illustrated). Exhibits light handling creases and faint fold lines, light fading to some of the lettering, and unobtrusive toning and light staining consistent with age. Professionally restored including paper replacements to the top left and right corners and to some of the 'OM' in Ballroom, while retaining the poster's attractive patina. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: The Stones are quoted in the landmark Rolling Stones 50 publication on the chaotic nature of their shows over the course of 1964:

"This was the time that our ballroom shows were getting increasingly difficult. Screaming girls all too often became fainting girls and just keeping them off the stage was a real challenge for the security staff - who were often ill-equipped and trained to do the challenging job they needed to do. For us, getting in and out of the girls was also becoming a nightmare. We had a police escort on many occasions."
