Description
Forbidden Planet (MGM, 1956), Original "Id Monster" Animation Artwork. Vintage original rough animation drawing accomplished in graphite on untrimmed animation stand paper depicting a single frame of the Id Monster from the landmark 1956 science fiction film, Forbidden Planet. The verso features handwritten pencil reading, "ANIMATED BY / JOS MEADOR" "48" and "The Monster of the Id / From 'Forbidden Planet'" written in a different hand in red pencil. Measuring 10.5" x 12.5". Joshua Meador was an illustrator, animator, and special effects artist who created the animation effects for this landmark film, most notably the Id Monster. Instead of using traditional cel animation for the film, Meador favored a radically new process in which each frame was sketched individually on animation stand vellum paper, then shot using high contrast film, from which a negative image was extracted. A red tint was added to the creature's outline and then composited back into the live-action footage, creating a disturbing, roiling creature that was groundbreaking at the time. Exhibits signs of age and wear, including foxing, signs of prior creases, a small ring wear mark on the upper righthand corner, and a .25" blemish on the center right. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
