Description

The Wizard of Oz (MGM, 1939), Emerald City "Wash & Brush Up Co." Scarecrow Groomer Hat. Vintage original pillbox-style hat worn by the groomers inside Emerald City's Wash & Brush Up Co., constructed of green and beige wool with cotton fabric sewn over a woven canvas structural support with integral hook-and-eye chin strap and rear neck flap. Exhibits the stitch work and common materials of studio-constructed wardrobe and the whimsical design characteristic of renowned costume designer Adrian's work for the singular MGM musical. Only three unnamed characters wore this style cap in the Jolly Old Land of Oz sequence, and this cap appears to screen match due to unique crimping along the proper left edge of the brim that appears on one of those three actors. In the scene, Dorothy (Judy Garland) and her friends receive a pampering spa treatment after arriving in Emerald City. The three characters specific to this ensemble were responsible for restuffing Scarecrow (Ray Bolger) with fresh straw. Exhibits some signs of wear and age, including occasional pulled threads, slight degradation to the internal woven structure, and some shape loss from storage. Overall in wonderfully preserved condition, displaying the characteristic whimsy and playfulness of Adrian's designs for the film. Originally obtained from the now-legendary David Weisz Co. MGM Auction of 1970. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
