Description
BG-98 Buffalo Springfield, Duane & Gregg Allman 1967 Fillmore Poster Signed by Stanley Mouse, Graded 9.8. First-and-only-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Buffalo Springfield, the Hour Glass featuring Duane & Gregg Allman and the Collectors playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on the weekend of December 21-23, 1967. Designed by Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse and known as BG-98 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was signed by Stanley Mouse and graded a steamrolling 9.8 Near Mint/Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). It's tough to think of a 1967 rock poster much more compelling than one featuring Neil Young, Stephen Stills, Duane Allman and Gregg Allman. Throw in Kelley & Mouse's popular design, Mouse's signature, the fact that it's Christmastime and then the stellar grade, and you have quite a poster. Measures 11" x 21". COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This was probably the best time in Buffalo Springfield's career to see them live, because they had just released their masterpiece second LP, Buffalo Springfield Again. It contained lifelong gems from Neil Young ("Mr. Soul," "Expecting to Fly" and "Broken Arrow") and Stephen Stills ("Bluebird" and "Rock & Roll Woman"). In addition, the band had just recorded Young's "On the Way Home" in November-December, which would kick off their third & final album the following year.
The Hour Glass featuring brothers Duane & Gregg Allman had made a lot of progress in '67. They had played their first-ever show in the spring; signed a record deal with Liberty Records in June; started recording their first album in August; attended a show by Cream at L.A.'s Whiskey-a-Go-Go in September; released their first album, The Hour Glass, and first single, "Nothing But Tears," in October; made their first appearance on a Bill Graham poster also in October (BG-89, opening for Eric Burdon & the Animals); hired a new bassist, Pete Carr, in November; and had kicked off December with a few nights playing the Whiskey and also a couple of nights at the Cheetah nightclub in Venice, CA.
The Collectors were a Canadian psych-rock band from Vancouver led by vocalist Howie Vickers and drummer Ross Turney. They were apparently known as the Collectibles at times up in Canada, too. Their debut album was released in 1968 on Warner Music Canada, and raised eyebrows by including a 19-minute work on Side Two, "What Love (Suite)." The long player was produced by David Hassinger, who also produced the first two Grateful Dead albums. After Vickers departed, the remaining band members morphed into Canadian band Chilliwack, who placed seven singles in Billboard's Hot 100 in the 1970's and 80's.
