ONE OF THE 'IMPOSSIBLE' EARLY FAMILY DOG POSTERS

FD-3 Paul Butterfield, Quicksilver 1966 Early Fillmore Auditorium Concert Poster Graded 7.0. An original first-printing San Francisco concert poster for the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Quicksilver Messenger Service playing at the Fillmore Auditorium on Friday thru Sunday nights, March 25-27, 1966. One of the toughest first printings to find in all of San Francisco poster collecting, this FD-3 was designed by Wes Wilson and has been graded to 7.0 Fine/Very Fine by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). But the grade is almost secondary, because this piece is so tough to find in any shape.

If you like electric Chicago blues, it didn't get any better than the Butterfield Blues Band at their peak. With the dynamic Michael Bloomfield on guitar, the band surely tore through many tracks from their self-titled debut album, released the previous fall. That LP featured "Born in Chicago," "I Got My Mojo Working," "Blues with a Feeling" and "Mystery Train." A few years ago, Rolling Stone magazine included it on their list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time."

A key set-breaker in early BG/FD collecting, and an opportunity that just rarely comes up. This is only the second first-printing that Heritage has ever offered. Measures 14" x 20". COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: There's an interesting footnote to this poster and weekend, which Bill Graham's autobiography covers. As the FD and BG camps were working cooperatively and sharing the Fillmore in the very beginning, this weekend (FD-3) was the first time a big act from out of town played for either promoter. Up until now, it had been all S.F. (or at least California) groups. The PBBB came into town from Chicago and blew the roof off the Fillmore; never had the promoters seen anyone so dynamic, tight and professional on their stage, and the audiences went nuts, too.

Well, as legend has it, Graham got up early Monday morning, called the band's booking agent back east and locked them down to play exclusively for him going forward. The PBBB came back three weeks later and headlined for Graham. He supposedly chided the laid-back Chet Helms for cruising into work at noon, and how the early bird gets the worm. It was never the same between the two promoters again, Helms moved over to the Avalon and they dug in their positions as competitors for talent from that moment forward.
