A LOVELY WOODSTOCK-ERA POSTER WITH A HEAVENLY GRADE

BG-194 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young 1969 Fillmore West & Winterland Concert Poster Graded 10 Gem Mint. First-and-only vintage printing San Francisco concert poster for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Blues Image and John Sebastian (of the Lovin' Spoonful) playing at both the Fillmore West and Winterland on Thursday thru Saturday nights, October 2-4, 1969. Known as BG-194 in the Bill Graham numbered series, this poster was graded a totally perfect peace-and-love 10 Gem Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company).

Few rock acts of the late 60's had the commercial, cultural and critical impact of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young. CSN were enjoying the amazing acceptance of their self-titled debut album, and Young was in the middle of recording his third solo record, After the Gold Rush. All four were fresh off their appearance at the Woodstock Festival two months earlier. Designed by Greg Irons, his final poster for Bill Graham, this poster's fun design captures the Woodstock ethos perfectly. Measures 14" x 21 1/8". From the David Swartz Concert Poster Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Blues Image had a lot of talented musicians in the band, which led to a hit single the following year, "Ride Captain Ride." One member was singer-percussionist Joe Lala, who actually played with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young later on, as well as Steve Stills' Manassas group. Singer-guitarist Mike Pinera was also a founding member, but right around this time he left the group to join Iron Butterfly and eventually do some playing with Alice Cooper. Keyboardist Skip Konte went on to join Three Dog Night, and guitarist Kent Henry moved over to Steppenwolf after Blues Image folded. (Not all these members played in Blues Image at the same time.)

John Sebastian needs no introduction as the principal guiding force behind the hit-making Lovin' Spoonful. He also had incestuous ties to the headliner on this poster. John was shortly to release his debut solo effort, John B. Sebastian, which was weirdly put out by two record companies in a legal dispute at the same time, Reprise and MGM. Guesting on that album, before they decided to form a trio, were... yep, David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash.
