Description

The Crusades (Paramount, 1935), Henry Wilcoxon "King Richard the Lionheart" Winged Helmet with Crown. 1935's The Crusades was, in DeMille's own words, "an example of what I call telescoping history", combining elements from multiple Crusades to tell a compelling story rather than striving for exact historical accuracy. Henry Wilcoxon takes center stage, delivering a powerful performance as King Richard the Lionheart. His portrayal anchors the film, bringing intensity and nuance to the legendary monarch. Wilcoxon captures Richard's dual nature as a bold warrior and a man torn by duty, love, and faith, elevating the character beyond mere historical icon in a way that was uniquely DeMille. King Richard's winged helmet, crafted from steel, features a removable crown and is a most impressive prop. In the book Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic, there is a photograph of a hospitalized DeMille reviewing costume sketches and props during preproduction for the film; this helmet is prominently seen on his bed. Helmet measures 8" x 10" x 14", not counting the movable wings, which each measure approximately 14" x 15". The wings are attached with screws and bolts which can be adjusted, and the faceplate raises and lowers. The removable crown measures 3" x 9" x 10". Both helmet and crown show slight oxidation and other signs of age, and several faux jewels in the crown are loose. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
