Description
The Huxtable Family Living Room Furniture from The Cosby Show (NBC TV, 1984-1992). The fancy furniture of Dr. Heathcliff and Claire Huxtable that comprise much of their living room from the trailblazing and multiple Emmy Award-winning sitcom, Cosby. This series was the first successful sitcom based on a standup comic's act and led to such subsequent shows as Seinfeld, Roseanne, Ellen, Home Improvement, The Drew Carey Show, and Everyone Love Raymond. The pieces include: (1) a rounded back sofa with powder blue upholstery with soft flower motif of white and pink, dark wood arm ends, legs, and trim along the base. This sofa replaced a beige sofa on the set about halfway through the show's 8-year run, and it was the focal point in their Brooklyn Heights brownstone home. It measures 82 in. long x 34 in tall x 34 in. deep. (2). A dark wood, oval coffee table in an English style with curved legs. Production designer, Garvin Eddy wanted an English style for the family's set but had a small budget, so decided on this Queen Anne-style from Ethan Allen. Measured 48 in. long x 16 in. tall x 26 in. deep. (3) A dark wood side table with single drawer. Measures 22 1/2 in. tall x 21 in. wide x 27 in. deep. (4) A custom-made, dark wood armchair with pale blue upholstered seat in the Chippendale style. Measures 34 1/2 in. tall x 22 in. wide x 21 in. deep. (5) A wing chair in coral pink upholstery with dark wood legs. This is one of two different chairs that sat in the same downstage right position, the first being an expensive antique that was replaced due to its fragility halfway through the show's run. Measures 40 1/2 in. x 27 1/2 in. wide x 27 in. deep. (6) A grandfather clock by Ridgeway in a dark wood case, scroll detailing, polished gold and silver metal face with ornate brass numerals, brass pendulum and other details that sat in the background at stage left. Measures 88 in. tall x 20 in. wide x 12 in deep. (7). An art print of African-American girls in profile by Varnette P. Honeywood that briefly hung on the backing wall behind the stairway. Housed in a wood frame that measures 30 in. wide x 24 in. All the items feature handwritten numbers or Cosby Show stamps by the production. The series is credited with single-handedly reviving the sitcom genre, and is the only such program to have its living room (including their grandfather clock) featured on a U.S. postage stamp. The items exhibit general wear commensurate with their age and extensive production use, one table missing a drawer handle screw, but remain in Very Good condition. Acquired from series Production Designer, Mr. Garvin Eddy.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
