Description

The Iconic Opening "Gun Barrel" Title Sequence for Dr. No -- establishing the look for all future Bond films.

Maurice Binder Original Storyboard Title Sequence Artwork for Dr. No (Eon Productions, 1962). Film lovers are very familiar with the signature, opening look of all James Bond films, featuring a procession of bullet holes that comes to a halt, then peering down the barrel of a gun at 007, who turns and fires, sending a flood of red over the screen. This, followed by undulating silhouettes of the female form, in tandem with the credits, cues the audience for the spy-action thrill ride to follow. The opening sequence of Dr. No, the first Ian Fleming James Bond film adaptation produced by Albert R. "Cubby" Broccoli, set the tone for all his Bond films to follow, and this credit goes to acclaimed title designer Maurice Binder. When asked how he came up with the concept, Binder stated, "It took me about 15 minutes to decide what to do. Since 007 was licensed to kill, I thought of the gun and the bullet holes, and because I had some mailing labels around at the time, I used them to animate the titles." Composing this lot are (23) storyboards of the opening credits. (5) Storyboards represent the genesis of the concept, each illustration board (measuring 21.5" x 15.5") features (6) panels measuring 6" x 3.5" comprised of paste-up artwork with stenciled letters, hand-drawn silhouettes in ink of James Bond appearing down the gun barrel and hand-cut colored gel overlays representing blood other color elements on the artwork. The remaining (18) boards (measuring 20" x 15") are numbered in series (from 1-18), each depicting a single 14.5" x 9.25" photostat with hand-cut colored gel overlays. Boards exhibit age and handling from production with some delamination of color gels. Production material from the early James Bond films is exceedingly rare. This incredibly important assemblage of artwork set the tone and look of all future Bond film opening credits. From the family of Maurice Binder. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
