Description
Major Dundee (Columbia, 1965), Yvonne Wood and Tom Dawson (15) Costume Sketches of Charlton Heston and Others, Plus Publicity Ephemera. Vintage original (15) costume sketches accomplished in pencil, India ink and watercolor and/or gouache, of which (9) are executed directly on 15" x 20" artist's boards, and (6) on various size artist's leaves tipped to 15" x 20" artist's boards. Depicting Charlton Heston as "Major Dundee", James Coburn as "Samuel T. Potts", Jim Hutton as "Lt. Graham", R.G. Armstrong as "Reverend Dahlstrom" and several others. This is Sam Peckinpah's big-studio, big budget transitional film between two of his most critically and publicly revered films, Ride the High Country (1962), and The Wild Bunch (1969). Though the credited costume designer is Tom Dawson, and set costumer his brother Gordon (who also acted as producer on several Sam Peckinpah films), all (6) of the Charlton Heston sketches (as solo depictions) are signed by the legendary and prolific Yvonne Wood. Chouinard School-trained and under contract to TCF, Universal, and others, Wood's career spanned decades, from 1943's The Gang's All Here to the 1981 Zoot Suit, some seventy-seven titles in all. Since the style of the tipped-on leaf sketches is noticeably different from these, we presume that Tom Dawson is likely responsible for executing those, though none are signed. Overall, a few have "change #" notations in upper left, and some of the others have character and performer notations on verso. Majority bear corner staple holes, either from premiere display (four special descriptive premiere display cards are included in this lot) or from removal of fabric swatches, none of which remain if so. In addition to the (4) 9.75" x 11" descriptive display cards, this lot also includes a trimmed original Window-Card poster, and (3) pages removed from an original pressbook. Sketches exhibit light expected production and display wear, including rounded corners, rusty staple marks, scattered light smudging from handling, minor foxing, a few small paint runs, and other relatively minor signs of age and use. Printed ephemera varies in condition, with aforementioned trimming, dampstaining, and general handling. In spite of all this, the entire collection is actually surprisingly well-preserved overall. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
