Description

Jack Cole "I Could Swear I Smell Burning Rubber" Original Playboy Cartoon Art (ca. 1954). Vintage original Playboy magazine cartoon accomplished in ink wash on 11.25" x 13" artist's leaf visible through 19" x 27" mat. The instantly recognizable style of Jack Cole is on display in this prime example of his wry humor and skilled hand. Through the pages of Playboy magazine, Hugh Hefner elevated Cole to stardom in his field. Signed, "Jack" in the lower border of art. Artist's inkstamp on the verso. The caption, "I could swear I smell rubber burning" appears in transfer lettering on the lower edge of the mat. Presented in original 25.25" x 33" black lacquer frame. Frame exhibits slight scuffing and handling. Provenance: "Playboy at 50: Selections from the Archives" Lot 18 - Christies, December 17, 2003. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
