Collection of Books and Magazines Inscribed to Terry Southern, Including Peter Beard's Personal Copy of Film as a Subversive Art (ca. 1965-1988). Vintage original group of books and magazines inscribed to or associated with Terry Southern, spanning 1965 to 1988 and featuring contributions from major literary and artistic figures of the 20th century. Includes (1) copy of The Long March by William Styron, inscribed in French with a "Killroy" doodle: "À Pierre / avec l'admiration... William (Big Bien) Styron / Roxbury / le 4 Mai / 1965"; (1) copy of Dark Brown by Michael McClure (1967), inscribed "This copy for Terry / Lord of Smut & Beauty / Michael"; (1) copy of The Surge by McClure (1969), inscribed "This copy for Terry / Michael"; (1) copy of The Adept by McClure (1971), inscribed "This copy for Terry / with thanks / for / his / light. / Michael"; and (1) copy of Rare Angel by McClure (1974), inscribed "For Terry - prose poet of / wit & black magic, / Michael." Also included is (1) copy of Audience Magazine, Vol. 2, No. 2 (1972), inscribed "To Terry" by featured artist Barbara Nessim with a cartoon of two female figures, dated "Sept. 27, 1972," with her address; (1) copy of Film as a Subversive Art by Amos Vogel, with Peter Beard's ownership signature and dated "Peter Beard / Mauntauk '76"; (1) copy of Freak Show by Albert Goldman, inscribed: "For Terry Southern / who created one comic / continent (North America?) / cool, sly, wicked + whacked out / answering to another - / hot, cooking, crazy + Jewish - / raised to existence by / his pal + playmate, / Lenny Bruce - / Affectionately, / Albert"; (1) copy of Children is All by James Purdy, inscribed "For / Terry Southern / all best wishes / and admiration / Jim / James Purdy"; and (1) copy of Vali Myers (self-titled art book, 1980), inscribed "For Terry / who gave me / my jeans / that I lived in / for years, / with great memories / of Paris, / love / Vali / N.Y.C. / Nov. 88." Books range in size from approx. 13.5" x 10" to 7.25" x 4.5" and exhibit staining, bent dust jackets, fading, sun damage, yellowing pages, bumped corners, and general wear. The copy of Film as a Subversive Art requires spine repair. Comes with full LOAs from Beckett Authentication Services and PSA/DNA. From the Collection of Terry Southern.
