Description

Letter from Stanley Kubrick to Carol Southern, (2) Photos of Terry Southern Taken by Kubrick and (1) Photo of Kubrick and Southern Together. Vintage original group of items related to the working relationship between screenwriter Terry Southern and director Stanley Kubrick, including a personal letter from Kubrick to Carol Kauffman, Southern's ex-wife and the mother of their son, Nile. The letter, dated April 27 (year unknown), is typewritten on Harris-Kubrick Pictures Corporation stationery and reflects Kubrick's admiration for Kauffman after a brief encounter. He writes, "Dear Carol, Perhaps you might remember our brief and awkward conversation late Tuesday night at the Rienzi," adding that he "asked you if you'd like to come to a screening of my new film" and noticed her address "on the back of the check you cashed." Kubrick continues, "I would enjoy very much seeing you again," suggesting that "perhaps some evening for dinner might be a good idea," and closes, "I'm there most mornings by 11. Yours sincerely, [signed] Stanley Kubrick." Ironically, the letter reveals that Kubrick asked Kauffman on a date before she met Southern or before Kubrick and Southern began working together. Also included are (3) original photographs. One shows Kubrick seated in a chair, taken from over Southern's shoulder. The other two, shot by Kubrick, feature Southern standing in a field in front of a pig-images that reflect Kubrick's eye for humor and composition. One photo is labeled "Credit: Stanley Kubrick" in neat blue ink, presumably in the director's hand. The letter measures 8.5" x 11" and shows standard folding, light creasing, a small tear near the center, and minor wear along 1-fold. The photos of Southern measure 8.25" x 10" with edge wear and one bent corner. The photo of Kubrick measures 7.5" x 9.5" and exhibits bumped corners and tape residue on the verso. Kubrick letter comes with Full LOAs from Beckett Authentication Services and PSA/DNA. From the Collection of Terry Southern.

More Information: Kubrick's letter reads in full:
He writes" "Dear Carol, Perhaps you might remember our brief and awkward conversation late Tuesday night at the Rienzi... I asked you if you'd like to come to a screening of my new film. You told me to tell David when and where and he'd forward me the information.
I'm afraid I couldn't help noticing your address on the back of the check you cashed, and so I am taking the liberty of sending you this note. I would enjoy very much seeing you again, perhaps some evening for dinner might be a good idea... I'm there most mornings by 11. Yours sincerely, [signed] Stanley Stanley Kubrick."
