Description

Terry Southern's Personal Typewriters (ca. 1940s, 1980s). A remarkable and historically significant pair of typewriters from the personal collection of screenwriter and author Terry Southern, whose work- including Dr. Strangelove (1964), Barbarella (1968), and Easy Rider (1969)-helped define the satirical and cultural edge of mid-century American literature and film. This lot includes (1) Royal Quiet Deluxe manual typewriter (ca. 1940s), housed in its original cloth-covered hard case, measuring approx. 13" x 11.5" x 5.5", and (1) Royal Aristocrat Electric typewriter (ca. post-1984), used during Southern's later career, measuring approx. 16" x 14" x 6", with a soft vinyl carrying case measuring approx. 18" x 15" x 7", along with (1) 1952 black-and-white photograph of Southern, cigarette in hand, typing on his Royal typewriter. Southern used the Royal Quiet Deluxe to write many of his most influential works, including the novels Flash and Filigree (1958), Candy (1958, with Mason Hoffenberg), The Magic Christian (1959), along with countless letters that helped establish his reputation as a razor-sharp satirist. He used the Royal Aristocrat Electric typewriter during the final phase of his career. Both typewriters exhibit wear consistent with age and use, including scuffs, scratches, and travel label residue. The latch on the Quiet Deluxe case is broken and currently held shut with string. Electronics untested. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From the Collection of Terry Southern.
