Description

Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin 1969 Atlanta Pop Festival Cardboard Concert Poster (AOR-4.183). An original cardboard window card advertising the two-day Atlanta International Pop Festival which took place one month before Woodstock at the Middle Georgia Race Way in Hampton, Georgia on July 4 & 5, 1969. Acts participating and found on this poster included Led Zeppelin on their first-album tour, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival in the biggest year of their career, Chicago Transit Authority before they became just Chicago, Joe Cocker with just one album out, Spirit, Booker T. & the MG's, Johnny Winter, the Staple Singers, Johnny Rivers still touring off the psychedelic Realization, Chuck Berry, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, jazz from Dave Brubeck & Gerry Mulligan, Canned Heat, Blood Sweat & Tears, Al Kooper, Tommy James & the Shondells, Pacific Gas & Electric, Sweetwater, Ian & Sylvia and Ten Wheel Drive. As for the two headliners, LedZeppelin.com displays a press review which stated, "Led Zeppelin received several standing ovations and was called back to do more; Janis and her new band tore everybody's minds."

It's stunning to think that you could see all of these acts over two days for just $12.50 total, if bought in advance, which would figure out to just pennies per song. Features a really compelling design of blue, yellow & orange by graphic artist Lance Bragg. It's interesting how despite Zeppelin barely being known at this point, there's a dirigible-like ship in the center artwork; very prescient. Measures 28" x 22" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.391 (illus.).

More Information: The board's very top edge has an ever-so-slight loss of white paper loss (but cardboard intact) above the "TL" of "Atlanta." The upper left corner has a half-inch horizontal crease in the white, barely a factor. The lower right corner has a ¾" arcing crease in the white only that's also a non-factor. In that area there's also a two-inch very light surface crease that does go through the yellow. There's a little bit of dirt in the top white margin up above "Chuck Berry" and the "A." And just a couple of very slight surface markings are visible when you hold the board to an extreme angle to the light.
