Description
Bob Dylan, Joan Baez 1965 Philadelphia, PA Concert Handbill w/Printed Info. An original concert-advertising handbill for Bob Dylan and Joan Baez appearing together at the Convention Hall in Philadelphia, PA on Friday night, March 5, 1965.This famous graphic image of Dylan and Baez against a rust background, created by folksinger Eric Von Schmidt, is well known to collectors. Heritage has sold both the poster and handbill several times with the white space at the top blank. This is, however, only the second time Heritage has been able to offer this piece with the venue information printed in. Filled-in specimens are just very, very few and far between, and on the rare occasion they do surface, they're usually from someone who attended a show and hung onto it. Dylan collectors almost get an electric shock on the rare occasion when they see one of these, either poster or handbill, with the concert info filled in.
The handbill has a very compelling appearance with that concert information boldly printed in. "Friday, March 5, 8:30 PM," it states. "At Convention Hall, 34th & Spruce Sts." No need to say Philadelphia, everyone knew. "Seats $4.50, 3.50, 3.00, 2.50, 1.75." Plain, simple and right to the point. Handbill measures 5 1/2" x 9 1/2" and grades to Near Mint Minus condition. From the Mitch Barth Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: This Von Schmidt artwork is estimated to have been used only for a few weeks, from late February to late March. It's so scarce that over the decades, our experts have seen it from only three other cities. Whether they ever bothered printing it for additional tour stops is questionable. Legend has it that Dylan didn't like the artwork, which may have slowed its use way down.
As for the music, this show marked "the end of the acoustic innocence" for Mr. Dylan. It took place on a Friday night, and the following Monday, March 8, Columbia Records released his hard-rocking single "Subterranean Homesick Blues," startling folk purists. Another two weeks later and Dylan's electrified Bringing It All Back Home LP came out. The pop-music world would never be the same.
Condition details: This piece is in outstanding condition compared to most samples we've seen over the years. The flyer has only general, light overall toning, and a tape stain on the verso located at the top center edge, plus a much smaller & lighter one off to the right. That's it. If you're a condition freak, this one's for you.
