Large Collection of Vintage Magazines, Playbills, and Other Printed Matter from the Personal Collection of Stewart Berkowitz....
Description
Large Collection of Vintage Magazines, Playbills, and Other Printed Matter from the Personal Collection of Stewart Berkowitz. As a lifelong fan, devotee, collector, and de facto preservationist of television memorabilia from the 1950s-1970s, Dr. Stewart Berkowitz was not limited in the scope of materials he amassed over the many decades of thoughtful collecting, ranging from iconic screen-worn costumes to children's toys and everything in between. One of his favorite figures from the era was the inimitable Jackie Gleason, who stormed across television screens, concert halls, auditoriums, and movie theaters for four decades, most notably on his sketch comedy program The Jackie Gleason Show (1949-1952; 1966-1970) and as the NYC bus driver Ralph Kramden in The Honeymooners (1955-1956). Dr. Berkowitz was nothing if not complete, and devoted, in his amassing of rare materials related to Gleason, including the paper materials on offer here, which offer a treasure trove of not just ephemera, but of the cultural history of a bygone era, as seen through the magazines, playbills, sheet music, and TV guides that supplement a completist's already marvelous collection.Presented here is a group of (75+) vintage original items of printed ephemera from Dr. Berkowitz's personal collection, consisting of (30) television magazines and weekly guides with Jackie Gleason/Honeymooners-related covers dating back to the late 1940s, (22) theater, arts, and music publications featuring Jackie Gleason covers including vintage Playbills from his theatrical appearances, song books, retrospective programs, independent tribute zines, and sheet music acquired from Gleason's own collection, (5) general pop culture magazines featuring Jackie Gleason covers, including 1- November 1953 issue of Cosmpolitan, 2- People magazines from July 1986 and February 1996, 1- December 1961 issue of Time magazine, and 1- July 1961 issue of Confidential magazine, (1) New York City visitor's guide from December 1959, (2) Golf World magazines from 1959 and 1965, and (1) Audrey Meadows Estate Catalog following the actress's passing in 1996. Included in this lot are several notable items not related to Jackie Gleason but relevant to the other collecting habits of Dr. Berkowitz, including (1) Marilyn Monroe centerfold calendar from 1984, (1) song book from I Love Lucy, and a handful of miscellaneous vintage ephemera. All items exhibiting expected age and wear commensurate with paper ephemera dating back almost 70 years, including bumped edges and creased corners, though overall presenting very well with many preserved in archival slip covers. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions. From The Stewart Berkowitz Television Treasures Collection.
