Description

Jimi Hendrix, Allman Bros. 1970 Atlanta Pop Festival Cardboard Concert Poster (AOR-4.178). An original pre-show cardboard window card advertising a big lineup of musicians playing at the Second Annual Atlanta International Pop Festival at the Middle Georgia Raceway in Byron, GA over the Fourth of July weekend in 1970. The biggest names include Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers Band with Duane, Sly & the Family Stone, Jethro Tull, B.B. King, Richie Havens, Ginger Baker, Spirit, John Sebastian and "many more," plus a giant fireworks show. Given the holiday, the board pulls off the red, white & blue U.S. flag/patriotic/hippie motif adroitly. This poster's been reprinted and bootlegged repeatedly, but this was definitely printed in the spring of 1970 for advertising purposes. AOR liked it so much they gave it a full page. Measures 28" x 22" and grades to Very Good condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.390 (illus.).

More Information: Board has had some professional touch-up repairs on the edges and corners, and tiny touches of red & blue filled in a few places but very minor in the scheme of things. Two-inch edge tear to the direct right of "Awareness" which reveals the cardboard underneath. A repaired one-inch tear top center that goes down between the "N" and "T" in "International." Tiny 1/8th" edge tear under the "Y" in "Raceway" at the bottom. Four-inch horizontal crease from the right side into "Fireworks Show." Usual and expected corner creases for a board of this age and condition, but nothing drastic. Verso is somewhat worse for the wear with tape lifts, dirt & grime, staining and so forth.
