Description
Smokey and the Bandit (Universal, 1977), Jackie Gleason "Sheriff Buford T. Justice" Signature Cowboy Hat. Original custom-made 4X Beaver Stetson cowboy hat made of soft khaki/taupe-colored beaver fur with beige ribbon band and silk-lined interior with leather sweatband printed, "Made by Stetson / Especially for / Jackie Gleason" and "Nudie's North Hollywood", and retaining internal Universal City Studios stamp. As seen worn by Sheriff Buford T. Justice (Jackie Gleason) in the 1977 action-comedy film Smokey and the Bandit. The film followed Bo "Bandit" Darville (Burt Reynolds) and Cledus "Snowman" Snow (Jerry Reed) as two truck-driving bootleggers attempting to smuggle 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta while being pursued by Sheriff Justice. The film also stars a young Sally Field as the runaway bride, Carrie. Hat exhibits production wear and age including some spots and stains to the exterior, and comes in a vintage original Stetson hat box, with Universal Studios Wardrobe stamp to lid, exhibiting bumps and scuffs to the exterior. Originally donated to the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles by Andre Lavery, costumer of the the third installment of the franchise and is accompanied by a signed LOA by Lavery, dated April 6, 1984, on Universal letterhead stating (in part): "The Stetson Open Road Hat was used by Mr. Gleason in all three installments of the 'Smokey and the Bandit' motion pictures... Mr. Gleason gave me the hat at the conclusion of filming". Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
