Description
Jimi Hendrix 1970 German Festival Concert Poster for His Final Show Ever. An original, before-the-show first printing of a poster advertising an "Open Air Love & Peace Festival" in the summer of 1970 on the Isle of Fehmarn, in the Baltic Sea off the eastern coast of Germany. The rock fest took place on September 4, 5 & 6, and has gone down in rock annals as the final concert performance by the legendary Jimi Hendrix, who passed away on Sept. 18.Additional performers included Rod Stewart & Faces, Sly and the Family Stone, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Procol Harum, Joan Baez, Ginger Baker's Air Force the year after Blind Faith, Canned Heat, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After, Taste (with Rory Gallagher) and many others.
Hendrix collectors are fortunate that an individual involved with posting them hung onto his extras, kept them in perfect shape and now we're able to enjoy them half-a-century later. They're absolutely the Real McCoy.
In our last auction, in August, the black & white version of this poster sold for $4,000.
Measures 11 ¼" x 32 ¼" and grades to Very Good Plus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: The poster's a real blast to read through... all the incredible details about side attractions and such... a living theatre, action cinema, "happenings," mixed media, "big junk sales," bazaar shopping, cheap barbeque, transportation arrangements, children and dogs free admission... a ton of planning went into this festival, it was a big deal. "Three days non stop," the poster promised, probably taking a cue from Woodstock.
Four configurations of this poster were made: a small black & white, a small color, a large black & white and a large color. This poster is the second of those four. They were all printed way before the weekend for purposes of advertising the event, but also as merch pieces to be sold on the grounds during the festival. That's why the smaller versions say "Poster DM 1.-" at the bottom, meaning its price was one Deutschmark. The bigger posters were 2 DM.
Condition details: This is a mint unused poster with one bit of damage, which knocks it down to VG+: a ½" tear at the very top, which goes down into the "6" in the dates. That's it; otherwise flawless.
