Description

Jefferson Airplane 1967 Santa Venetia, CA Boxing-Style Concert Poster. An original cardboard advertising poster for the Jefferson Airplane appearing in the Bay Area suburb of San Rafael, CA on Thursday evening, January 26, 1967. This piece has a lot going for it that collectors have loved for years. "Take Off! - 3 Full Hours" it states at the top, and the fun has begun. Great font for the group's name, nice picture from the cover session for their as-yet-unreleased Surrealistic Pillow album, and seven songs listed from their first album Takes Off. But then "New Release - 'My Best Friend'" plugs a song - an album track - from Surrealistic, which was released the following Monday. So this piece perfectly straddles the transitional ground between the band's first LP / Signe Anderson era, and the arrival of Grace Slick and the explosive summer of love they were about to experience. And get a load out of all those ways to buy tickets... there was certainly no shortage of outlets. The Airplane were right on the cusp of becoming the leading rock attraction in the Bay Area, hands down. First-time-ever Heritage offering. Measures 15 7/8" x 24" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.

More Information: Poster was once bent – not folded – in half across the middle, leaving horizontal creases all the way across. They arguably do not show looking straight-on, but visible when the board is tilted a little. Both top corners have two-inch diagonal creases, with the right one being extra potent creating a weakened corner that flexes, but not in danger of falling off. Bottom left corner dinged and creased. There are lots of little tack holes throughout; there are a dozen just in the "Take Off!" white area up top. Only two of them are in lettering: in the "p" in "Ralph" and the "T" in "Take." Either side of the poster has pinholes halfway down, with the left one circled by a large indented ‘halo.' An edge crease then starts there and runs down the left side for about five inches. We then count two pinholes in the lower left corner, way out of the way; two in the bottom middle, above the street address; a bigger one above the "A" in "Pre-Sale"; and then seven in the lower right corner area, none of them on the red letters. The board is just a little bit wavy, not 100% flat. "1967" is written in black pen at the bottom under "Tickets." Toning throughout. Verso has a tape stain in lower left corner.
