Description

Anything Goes (Paramount, 1956), Zizi Jeanmaire "Gaby Duval" Set of (4) Costume Sketches by Edith Head. Vintage original (4) Anything Goes (1956) costume sketches accomplished in gouache, graphite and ink on 14" x 17" artist's paper by legendary costume designer Edith Head. Variations for three outfits worn by Gaby Duval (Zizi Jeanmaire): a fur-trimmed suit, a lilac formal evening gown and a black and white daytime dress. Of the two sketches for the fur-trimmed suit, one is a preliminary black & white rendering with "Anything Goes" written across the left mid-section of the sketch. The second is a finished color version matching the on-screen outfit worn in a nightclub scene with Bill Benson (Bing Crosby) and Ted Adams (Donald O'Connor). The sketch for the lilac formal evening gown features a deep neckline and a very fitted skirt with layered flounces at the hem. The on-screen plum-colored version has a higher bustline and is worn with an evening coat in a scene with Bing Crosby. The third outfit-a black and white daytime dress-is worn in scenes with Crosby in the ship's dining room and gymnasium. The on-screen skirt is fuller and longer than in the sketch. In a separate scene, Bing sings the Cole Porter classic 'All Through the Night' to Jeanmaire's character. Exhibiting age and production handling, with chipping along one top margin from artist's pad removal, a few marginal tears, and other relatively minor issues. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.
