Description
Rick Griffin 1967 Hand-Colored Berkeley Bonaparte "Huichol Indian" Poster (AOR-2.359). An original head-shop poster designed by legendary poster artist Rick Griffin which was initially printed in black & white, but then hand-colored in by Griffin himself and gifted to the bookkeeper of Berkeley Bonaparte, the S.F. Bay Area poster distributor who carried hippie-pad "personality posters" for sale back in the day. Terrific array of autumn colors used by Rick. Plus we're including another uncolored B&W specimen in the lot. The image was repurposed onto other posters and has other nicknames out there including "Mescalito," "Stoned Indian" and "Indian Hippie."Both posters measure 14" x 19 1/4". The colored poster grades to Very Good condition and the B&W one is Near Mint Minus. From the Fred Weinberg Collection and LOP from Fred Weinberg. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock - Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.238 (illus.).
More Information: According to RickGriffinDesigns.com, "On a journey up into the Sierra Madre mountains, Ida and Rick Griffin encountered the Huichol Indians, a shamanistic tribe renowned for art based on peyote-induced visions. The Huichol and their sacred art fascinated Griffin, and soon after, Mescaleros began popping up as recurring motifs in his works. This poster was printed three times by Griffin and there is another unauthorized black light edition in circulation as well. Also, an image present in the Berkeley Bonaparte catalogue from 1967."
Condition details: The hand-colored version has six pinholes, one in each corner and one top center and one bottom center, all in the white margins of course. Couple of drops of light-brown staining around "Bonaparte," very possibly from Rick's coloring brush. Lower left corner has a two-inch diagonal crease which is very light and doesn't touch the artwork. The right side of poster has three creases in the margin which are visible almost entirely on the verso only. General overall toning. And the verso has, naturally, scattered paint marks from Rick's table.
The white poster has only a light one-inch crease in the lower right under "Calif." and a small, super-light circular stain in the white margin about 2/3 of the way down.
