Description
High Noon (Columbia, 1952), Revised Screenplay by Carl Foreman. Vintage original 110-page (as paginated) High Noon (1952) screenplay by Carl Foreman, from the magazine story "The Tin Star" by John Cunningham. Dated July 30, 1951, with pink revision pages dated August 7, 1951. Produced by Stanley Kramer, directed by Fred Zinnemann, starring Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Thomas Mitchell, Lloyd Bridges, Katy Jurado, Otto Kruger and Lon Chaney Jr. This was one of several films that writer Carl Foreman was nominated for either an Academy Award or a Golden Globe for screenplay, this time actually for both, plus he was the winner of the Writer's Guild award for that category. In addition, this classic, timeless film of one brave man standing up against seemingly impossible odds, won four Oscars: Best Actor, Editing, Song and Music Score, not to mention nominations in three other categories including Best Picture. High Noon is widely recognized by film historians as the catalyst for two decades of 'revisionist' Westerns-so named for subverting classic Hollywood tropes of confident, white-hat heroes triumphing over black-hat villains or so-called "heathen redskins". Sharing a dark psychology of doubt and suspicion with "Noir" films of the 40s and 50s, this modernist "revision" of the American West is, arguably, best represented both by this film which began the cycle, and of all things, the Italian film which ends it, namely Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). The present script was stamped on the front "Stanley Kramer Productions" studio-printed wrap with "check-out" assignation box, which bears the names "Dougherty" and "Hadenfield" in graphite, with check-out date "8/6/51" which appears to be initial-approved by Carl Foreman, plus typed ""High Noon"/ Screenplay/ By/ Carl Foreman", stamped "Aug 6 1951" and written "Changes 8-17-51" and "46". Missing rear studio wrap, but contains all original printed pages. Front wrap shows minor handling, bumping, tiny tears, and a few small damp stains. Interior shows a few pages with corner turned during production, plus various brief notations distributed throughout, most notably on first page (after title page) approval initials or notations from "Kramer", "Dougherty/ Hadenfield", "G" [presumed George Glass], and an illegible 3-letter initial dated 8-20-51. Remainder of internal notations appear limited to check-marks and lines denoting shooting progress. Only middle brad present. The poster image is for reference only and is not included with this lot.
