Description
The Philadelphia Story (MGM, 1940), Typed-Carbon Early Draft Script by Waldo Salt and Donald Ogden Stewart, with Revisions. Vintage studio bound and bradded, undated 131-page file (deaccessioned) copy, typed-carbon The Philadelphia Story script on onion-skin tissue leaves, with pink tissue revisions dated from 7/2/1940 to 8/13/1940, inserted throughout. Written by Waldo Salt and Donald Ogden Stewart adapted from Phillip Barry's hit 1939 play. Stamped on the cover "Complete" and "File Copy", the latter crossed out in blue grease pencil for deaccession from MGM Script Dept. archives. Retaining original script dept. check-out label, and typed variously "The Philadelphia Story" and "From: Waldo Salt/ Donald Ogden Stewart". Before filming, Philip Barry's now-classic story debuted on Broadway in 1939, starring Katharine Hepburn. Howard Hughes bought the rights and gifted them to her. Both Hepburn and James Stewart earned Oscar nominations-Stewart won-and the film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. It marked a triumphant Hollywood comeback for Hepburn after a career slump. C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant), the ex-husband of Tracy Lord (Katharine Hepburn), returns on her wedding day to disrupt her marriage to self-made man George Kittredge (John Howard). Grant's sharp comedic performance rivaled co-star James Stewart's, who ultimately won the Oscar. The film, a brilliant romantic comedy, earned Donald Ogden Stewart an Oscar for Best Screenplay, while uncredited contributor Waldo Salt-later blacklisted by HUAC-revived his career with acclaimed works like Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Day of the Locust (1975). With moderate handling and fading to covers, including small marginal chips, creases and tears. The poster image is for reference only and is not included with this lot. Comes with a COA from Heritage Auctions.Auction Info
