Description
Gone With the Wind (MGM, 1939), Walter Plunkett Costume Sketch of Vivien Leigh as "Scarlett O'Hara" in Iconic "Tara/ Change #1" White Ruffled Ball Gown with Red Belt and Shoes. Vintage original Gone With the Wind costume sketch accomplished in pencil, ink and gouache on 18" x 22.25" artist's board, with 15.75" x 20.75" visible through original studio-affixed 18" x 23" permanent crème-colored beveled mat. Retaining (4) fabric sample swatches affixed to the upper left corner, (3) different age-toned of natural muslin or linen (though possibly silk), and (1) of silk embroidery. The resulting costume is one of the most iconic in the entire film, most notably when Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) is walking the gardens of the O'Hara mansion "Tara" with her father Gerald O'Hara (Thomas Mitchell) and is being lectured by him about the importance of fighting for, and retaining their land and legacy. Leigh in this lovely gown is among the most frequently reproduced images from this equally iconic film. Signed "Plunkett" in the lower right beneath image, with studio applied character-name snipe to the left of signature. Verso exhibits studio costumer's form inkstamp, description of character name, production #, and most notably, "Change #1". With adhesive remnants also on the verso, and exhibiting bumped corners, with minor soiling and moderate age toning. Including foxing scattered throughout all of recto, plus an old 8" handling crease from center top margin down through Leigh's extended arm.
