Description
Ray Charles 1963 Regal Theater, Chicago Jumbo Concert Poster. An original cardboard advertising window card for "The Genius" playing at the esteemed Regal Theatre in Chicago for a full week commencing on Friday, July 12, 1963. This red, white & blue board features a great, and very sharply printed, photo of the artist smiling, greatly enhancing the presentation.Brother Ray was riding high on a commercial peak bigger than any other in his career. The previous year, when he first merged R&B and country music, he had wiped the charts clean with the Top 10 pop hits "I Can't Stop Loving You," "You Don't Know Me" and "You Are My Sunshine." Then in '63, on either side of this engagement, he went Top 10 pop with "Take These Chains from My Heart" in the spring and Top 5 pop with "Busted" in the fall. Throw in his other charters like "Born to Lose," "Careless Love," "That Lucky Old Sun" and "Your Cheating Heart," and... do you think Ray might've played some important music this week?
The bill is nicely rounded out by The Flamingos ("I Only Have Eyes for You"), R&B legend Percy Mayfield (composer of "Hit the Road, Jack") and Little Jimmy Scott (not only Ray but Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Frankie Valli all loved him).
The only specimen Heritage has ever seen or heard of, much less offered for sale. Measures 22" x 28" and grades to Mint Minus condition. COA from Heritage Auctions.
More Information: Another item recently found in the small stash of Chicago posters printed back in the day and kept in clean storage all these decades.
Condition details: Poster is in immaculate shape, with only the lightest of brown markings (not toning) across the entire top edge, and a few tiny specks of white paper loss (but not board) inside the brown, keeping this from straight "Mint." Also present is super-duper light toning along the bottom edge under the red stripe, a two-inch vertical scratch in the extreme upper right blue box (to the right of "So."), and a couple of left-edge imperfections up by "1:30" and "7".
