Description

John Coltrane 1963 Boxing-Style Concert Poster, Los Angeles.
An original cardboard window card for saxophone giant John Coltrane at Shelly's Manne-Hole nightclub in Los Angeles, CA in December 1963. A strikingly simple orange & black design which, rather than using simple straight lettering like most boxing-style posters, adds a dramatic flair by tilting Trane's name at a 45-degree angle... surely an attention-grabber.

Another unusual aspect of this poster is that the year is given - twice. That's just the way some typesetters, promoters, nightclubs or artist management liked it. "Thur. Dec. 12 '63 thru Sun. Dec. 22 '63," it reads. And what a time in Trane's career this was... his Classic Quartet period. How good was he at this phase? Good enough to have two live albums released that were recorded this year... Live at Birdland and Newport '63. He recorded part of his album Impressions this year as well. A Love Supreme was just one year away.

As for the nightclub name, Shelley Manne was a well-known jazz drummer, and had a fun play on words in naming his own nightclub "Shelly's Manne-Hole," on Cahuenga Blvd. in Hollywood.

Poster grades Very Good Plus, in excellent condition with some toning and staple holes in a few places, plus three corners are slightly rounded. Otherwise it feels like a fresh, strong card. There is some factory smudging of the black ink which happened at the printer's in the lower left date and the "C" and "E" of "Coltrane." Measures 14" x 22" give or take.
