Nancy Cunard, 1929, 16.75" x 12" Original Exhibition Photograph by Cecil Beaton. Collection of Leonard Stanley. Vintage gelatin silver matte borderless double-weight 16.75" x 12" bromide exhibition photograph (dry mounted on 14.25" x 20.25" mat board) of Nancy Cunard, 1929, by Sir Cecil Beaton, CBE, signed "Beaton" in red grease pencil on the mount, and CECIL BEATON / PHOTOGRAPH wet stamp on the mount verso. A smaller print was accepted by H.M. Government and allocated to the National Portrait Gallery in 1991. Very fine, with edge chipping at the upper right and paper loss on the mount verso. Comes with a COA from Heritage AuctionMore Information: Nancy Cunard (1896-1965) left the socialite world she was heir to and fought against social injustice as a wartime journalist during the Spanish Civil War and for the Allied Expeditionary Force. Cunard was the subject of paintings by Oskar Kokoschka and Manuel Ortiz de Zárate, photographs by Cecil Beaton and Man Ray, and characters in works by Ernest Hemingway and Evelyn Waugh. She was also a prolific poet, translator, and founder of The Hours press in Réanville, Normandy, the first publisher of Samuel Beckett and Laura Riding. Her relationship with black pianist Henry Crother led to her championing the cause of civil rights, coauthored The White Man's Duty (1942) with George Padmore, considered a touchstone of the West African liberation movement.
