On December 17, 1903, Wright was the first man to pilot a controlled, powered and sustained flight, at Kitty hawk, North Carolina. On May 9, 1926, Byrd was the first to fly to the North Pole, leaving from the airfield at Spitsbergen (Svalbard), and returning after 15 hours and 57 minutes, for a distance of 1,535 miles.
