Description

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Universal, 1923) Lon Chaney 8" x 10" Original Studio Release Photograph. PSA/DNA Type 1. Vintage gelatin silver semi-gloss 8" x 10" studio release photograph of Lon Chaney as "Quasimodo" in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Production code 3874-120 in India ink. Lon Chaney was a towering figure during the peak years of silent film, transforming into radical extremes of character, grotesquely in The Phantom of the Opera, as a persecuted Quasimodo in Hunchback of Notre Dame, as a menacing ghoul in London After Midnight, on hobbled knees in The Penalty, as a self-inflicted amputee in The Unknown. Chaney was unique in manifesting the darker, malignant side of men's souls, not so much in disguise as completely disappearing into the Other. From the Collection of Steve Sustayta.
