Description
Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane 1968 So-Cal Newport Pop Fest Handbill Graded 9.0 (AOR-3.61). An original round-shaped concert flyer for the First Annual Newport Pop Festival taking place in Costa Mesa (Orange County), California on Saturday and Sunday, August 3 & 4, 1968. This is the green & purple OHB-B version; the OHB-A version had red lettering on a peach background. In retrospect, the Grateful Dead were the biggest attraction of course, but novelty act Tiny Tim was hot as a pistol at this moment, so there he is, up in the Saturday headlining spot. The star-studded affair also included the talents of the Jefferson Airplane (closing the weekend late Sunday afternoon), Sonny & Cher, Iron Butterfly, Steppenwolf, Eric Burdon and the Animals, The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Country Joe & the Fish, Blue Cheer, the Chambers Bros., the Electric Flag, Canned Heat, the James Cotton Blues Band, Things to Come and the Illinois Speed Press.
The promoter was Wesco-Scenic Sounds Productions and local L.A. boss jock (DJ) Humble Harve of AM powerhouse KHJ had enough name recognition to get listed at the top.
Heritage has only ever auctioned off one of these scarce flyers, and it was 19 years ago, in 2006. Measures 6 ¾" in diameter and has been graded a humbling 9.0 Very Fine/Near Mint by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
Literature: See Grushkin, Paul, The Art of Rock: Posters from Presley to Punk, Abbeville Press, New York, 1987, p.272 (illus. - the other-colored one).
