Description

Grateful Dead 1968 "Memorial" Carousel Ballroom Concert Handbill Graded 8.0 (AOR-2.160). An original first-printing San Francisco concert flyer for the Grateful Dead, Charlie Musselwhite and Petris playing a three-day engagement over Memorial Day weekend at the Carousel Ballroom (later the Fillmore West) on May 30-31 and June 1, 1968. Alton Kelley's chilling artwork threw a spotlight on the copious war-protesting that was going on in the tumultuous year of 1968.

This piece was plagued by mis-dating on two fronts. It originally said "Friday - Saturday - Sunday" in blue letters across the top, but the shows actually happened on Thursday thru Saturday nights. Thus, the blank spaces at the top before each date in this OHB-B version. And then the Art of Rock book got the year wrong, erroneously calling it 1969 (which is reflected in the grading strip); it's definitely 1968.

This handbill measures 7" x 11" and has been graded a respectable 8.0 Very Fine by CGC (the Certified Guaranty Company). From the Tim Backstrom Grateful Dead Collection. COA from Heritage Auctions.
