Description

The Beatles 1963 Southport, England "She Loves You" Concert Handbill. An original British paper concert flyer advertising "Britain's Fabulous Disc Stars," the Beatles, playing a week's worth of shows at the Odeon Theatre in Southport, England (within Merseyside, 20 miles directly north of Liverpool) starting on Monday evening, August 26, 1963. The promoters must have been very happy because on the previous Friday, EMI/Parlophone had released the group's fourth single, "She Loves You," which drove everyone mad and surely guaranteed complete sell-outs from the first show to the last (just in case they weren't already).

A lot of people don't realize that when it comes to hit singles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, second-billed here and also managed by Brian Epstein, were just as successful as the Fab Four in 1963. Both groups had three #1 singles this year. Gerry Marsden & Co. took a step down in '64 with "only" three Top 10 hits, and then faded into obscurity.

Before you ignore everyone else, remember that the Fourmost were also managed by Brian Epstein, signed to Parlophone / produced by George Martin, and had a Top 10 hit in '63 with Lennon-McCartney's "Hello Little Girl." Tommy Quickly was also managed by Epstein, and also released a Lennon-McCartney exclusive as a single this month, "Tip of My Tongue," but in rare fashion that single tanked. Quickly managed only one Top 40 British hit in his career, the next year. (Beatle perfectionsits note: "Girl" was actually entirely a Lennon composition, and "Tongue" was entirely McCartney.)

The bill was rounded out by the Sons of the Piltdown Men, Gary & Lee and MC/comedian Billy Baxter. The booking from remains intact and not written on.

Measures 5 3/4" x 10 1/4" and grades to Good condition. The item probably once got wet and now feels like dried-out glossy paper, a bit wavy in places but still with good solid structure. Some dull staining on the verso shows through prominently in a large mark above the "S" in "Beatles." There is also more scattered, smaller blemishes here & there which our photos display, especially in the upper right corner area, where there is also a tack hole above "Twice." There are also ΒΌ" and 1/8" edge tears on the top above the phone number. Verso has remnants of other paper from where it was likely once glued into a scrapbook. So it's definitely worse for the wear, but the red lettering remains bright and the eight floating heads have surprisingly strong presence and resolution. COA from Heritage Auctions.
