Description
The Clash 1981 Bonds New York, NY Multi-Date Concert Poster. A piece of incredible documentation of the legendary residency the Clash did at Bond International Casino (aka, Bonds) in the early summer of 1981. The Only Band That Matters played plenty of great shows over the course of their career, but this string of 17(!) performances is one of their most-heralded.This previously-folded poster lists "New Dates for Inconvenienced Clash Fans," showing what the original dates and the revised dates were. If you bought tickets from Ticketron or from the box office, you had revised dates or a refund.
These Clash shows took place off the back of the release of the group's 1981 triple-LP Sandinista! This was a pivotal time for the band, at the point where their popularity really began to soar. The venue had a limited capacity of only 1,750 (though the promoters had reportedly sold up to 3,500 tickets for each show, forcing the local Fire Department to cancel one performance), so, rather than let disappointed fans down, the Clash agreed to play more shows.
When all was said and done, they played 17 performances. Demand was so strong that eight shows were clearly not enough. And there was a unique opening act at every performance: the post-punk of the Fall, the abrasive hardcore of the Dead Kennedys and the Bad Brains, the hip-hop maestro Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, and reggae legend Lee "Scratch" Perry. Regardless of the lukewarm reception to the hip-hop artists (which Clash frontman Joe Strummer admonished the crowd for), it showed the band truly embraced and promoted what they were into.
Measures 8 ½" x 14". In Very Good condition with several fold/creasing marks, soiling, and smudges. COA from Heritage Auctions.
