Description
Bobby "Blue" Bland 1964 Vancouver, B.C., Canada Concert Poster. An original cardboard window card advertising R&B legend Bobby "Blue" Bland performing at the Exhibition Gardens in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on Friday night, January 31, 1964. An attractive color scheme of robin's-egg blue, pink, white and black combine to give this poster its unique feel.Just like James Brown and Ike & Tina Turner were doing at the time, Bland featured other players from his own band, his "Revue," on his concert posters and almost present them as if they were opening acts, to expand the perception of his show. Nothing wrong with that; we're guessing that Al "TNT" Braggs, Eloise Hester and Wayne Bennett took strong solo turns before Bobby walked out.
Billboard magazine completely discontinued their R&B chart for the entire year of 1964, so we can't tell you that Bobby impressively charted this-and-that during the year of this poster. But we can say that the year before, 1963, he had the #1 R&B smash "That's the Way Love Is"; and in 1965 he returned to the top five of the R&B charts with "These Hands (Small but Mighty)."
Measures 16" x 24 5/8" and grades to Very Good Minus condition. A three-inch tear extends from the left edge into Mr. Bland's face and reaches down to the inner point of his eyebrow. It was mended with clear cello tape years ago. There are also numerous surface creases throughout the board, which do not break color except in the black bar above the printer's credit. Eight pinholes in the white across the top, including the corners, and four across the bottom, including two on "1217." The extreme top & bottom edges also ruffled from decades of storage. General toning throughout. COA from Heritage Auctions.
